Socio-pragmatic difficulties

Inadequate or inappropriate pragmatics / social communication skills constitute a significant component of language disorders. Pragmatics in children with language disorders may be inadequate or even inappropriate, for example, failure to initiate conversation and inappropriately interrupting others while speaking.

 

A child with semantic pragmatic difficulties / social communication disorders often:

  • Uses inappropriate echoed social phrases

  • His/her conversation can sound too grown-up or rude.

  • Misunderstands what the conversation partner intends.

  • Doesn't initiate conversation appropriately.

  • Doesn't use language sociably and tends not to bother about social greetings.

  • Uses few words to describe thoughts, feelings and intentions of others.

  • Not interested in or able to follow topics outside his/her own experience.

  • Talks non-stop about his/her own interests.

  • Understands verbal messages literally.

  • Doesn’t understand indirect speech, jokes and sarcasm.
