Voice Hyiene
VOICE HYGIENE RECOMMENDATIONS INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
- Avoid shouting, screaming and speaking with an excessively loud voice.
- Increase the amount of water taken per day and keep a bottle of water to take a sip of water every now and then. This can help hydrate the mouth and vocal tract.
- Avoid excessive throat clearing and / or coughing.
- Build periods of vocal rest into his day and reduce unnecessary talking especially with the existence of loud background noise.
- Decrease the amount of excessively sugary sweets and avoid excessively cold or hot drinks.
- Speak in sentences of moderate length and take a breath before each sentence.
- Speak with a confidential tone – using modal / usual pitch and quality – rather than whispering.
- Try to be within three feet of his listener when speaking (whenever possible).
- Some drugs may cause mouth and throat dryness. The use of such drugs should be restricted.
- Whenever possible, use of sound amplification system (e.g. a microphone) while teaching / talking to large groups is preferable.
