Autism Spectrum Disorders
EARLY SIGNS OF AUTISM
The child:
- doesn't respond on calling his name
- has limited eye contact
- appears as if he is hard of hearing / can't hear properly
- doesn't care if others are around or not (including his parents)
- prefers to play by himself in a routine
- doesn't point at objects; sometimes holds his mother's hands and use her finger to point at desired objects / activities rather than using his own finger
- does some repetitive movements such as rocking, spinning, or hand flapping
- lacks Joint attention is the shared focus / experience of two individuals on an object. Joint attention is achieved when one person attracts the attention of another to an object by eye-gazing, pointing or other verbal or non-verbal methods e.g. when the child looks at an object, then looks at an adult, then looks once more to the object in order to indicate his desire to get the object or play with it or when an adult and a child read a book together and the child is engaged with the activity the adult is doing and pointing at the pictures in the story.
