Cognitive Difficulties
COGNITIVE DELAY:
Pre-requisites for normal language development include; intact mental abilities & cognitive functions, normal hearing abilities (both peripheral as well as central), normal sensory channels and stimulating environment
Cognitive abilities are mental skills necessary for a successful life. Cognitive Delay is signified by notably lower-than-average intellectual functioning as defined by the intelligence quotient (IQ).
CAUSES OF COGNITIVE DELAY
The specific cause of cognitive delay can remain unknown in many cases. Early alterations of embryonic development account for some cases. Others may be caused by problems during pregnancy or at the time of birth. It can also occur secondary to some chromosomal abnormalities and syndromes. Moreover, some general medical conditions (such as infections or trauma) acquired in infancy or childhood can contribute to a child's cognitive delay. Additionally, some cases can occur secondary to environmental influences (such as lack of nurturing and social or language stimulation).
Children having cognitive delay, usually have language difficulties. Both receptive as well as expressive skills are usually affected in these children. They also have academic difficulties. The severity of the language and academic problems that these children have are greatly attributed to their cognitive delay.
